5-Minute Typing Test FAQ

Why take a 5-minute typing test instead of a 1-minute test?

A one-minute test measures your burst speed โ€” most typists can hold a near-sprint for sixty seconds. A five-minute test measures your sustainable speed: fatigue, accuracy drift and concentration all start to matter, which is much closer to real work like writing, coding or transcription. Most people score 5โ€“10 WPM lower over five minutes than over one.

What is a good score on a 5-minute typing test?

Because sustained effort is harder, a 5-minute score of 35โ€“45 WPM is solidly average, 55+ WPM is fast, and 75+ WPM over five minutes is professional-level endurance. Accuracy above 97% matters more than the extra speed at every level.

Do employers use 5-minute typing tests?

Yes โ€” administrative, transcription, data-entry and customer-support roles commonly use timed tests of 3 to 5 minutes, usually requiring 40โ€“60 WPM at 90%+ accuracy. Practicing the full five minutes beforehand is the best way to prepare, because most applicants only ever train one-minute sprints.

How is my WPM calculated in this test?

Net WPM = correct characters รท 5 รท minutes elapsed, the industry-standard normalization. Only characters you type correctly count toward your score, and accuracy is correct keystrokes divided by total keystrokes. Your best 5-minute score is saved separately from your 1-minute score.
