Typing Speed Chart: What Is a Good WPM?
The average typing speed is around 40 WPM. Professional transcriptionists type 80–95 WPM, and the world's fastest typists exceed 200 WPM in short sprints. Here is how test scores typically map to skill levels:
| Score | Level | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Below 30 WPM | Beginner | Learning the keys — focus on accuracy, not speed. |
| 30–40 WPM | Average | Matches most office workers and students. |
| 41–60 WPM | Fast | Faster than roughly 80% of typists. |
| 61–80 WPM | Very fast | Professional territory — competitive typists live here. |
| Above 80 WPM | Elite | Top 1%. Transcriptionists and typing racers. |
Typing Test FAQ
How does this typing speed test work?
You get a stream of common English words and 60 seconds. The clock starts on your first keystroke. Type each word and press Space to move to the next; fix mistakes with Backspace. When time is up you get your net WPM, accuracy and a skill tier.
How is WPM calculated in this test?
Net WPM counts only the characters you typed correctly, divided by 5 (the industry-standard word length) per minute. Raw WPM counts every keystroke. Your accuracy is correct keystrokes divided by total keystrokes.
What is a good score on a typing test?
The average typist scores 35–45 WPM. Anything above 60 WPM is fast, and above 80 WPM is elite. But a good score is also an accurate one — below 95% accuracy, speed starts working against you.
Why does accuracy matter if my WPM is high?
Every mistake costs you a Backspace, a retype, and mental context-switch — usually more time than typing the word correctly at a slower pace. High-WPM, low-accuracy typists are almost always slower in real work than their raw score suggests.
Is this typing test free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up. Your best score is saved locally in your browser, so you can come back and try to beat it any time.
