How to Type Faster: 12 Tips That Actually Work
There is no trick that doubles your typing speed overnight โ but there is a training path that reliably adds 10โ30 WPM within a couple of months. It looks boring, and it works. Here are the twelve principles that matter, roughly in the order you should apply them.
Get the fundamentals right
- Learn true touch typing. Fingers on the home row (ASDF / JKL;), each finger owns its column, and you never look down. This alone is worth 10โ20 WPM to hunt-and-peck typists.
- Sit properly: feet flat, wrists floating, elbows at roughly 90ยฐ. Speed dies at bent wrists.
- Stop stretching for keys. If a finger travels, technique is off โ find the correct finger for that key instead of forcing the index finger to do everything.
- Use the bumps on F and J to re-center without looking. Losing home-row anchor is the #1 hidden speed killer.
Train accuracy before speed
This is the counterintuitive part: typing slower and cleaner makes you faster. Every mistake costs a backspace, a correction and mental reload โ easily triple the time of typing the word right. Practise at a pace where you make almost no errors; speed grows underneath that accuracy ceiling on its own.
- Target 97%+ accuracy in every practice session before trying to go faster.
- Type common words (the, that, and, you) until they are automatic โ they are 40% of everything you write.
- Drill your weak keys: everyone has two or three letters that trip them. Thirty focused reps a day fixes most of them.
Build real speed
- Find your rhythm. Fast typists are not frantic โ they are metronomic. Even cadence beats burst-and-stall every time.
- Look ahead: keep your eyes a word or two in front of your fingers, like a musician reading ahead in the score.
- Practise daily for 10โ15 minutes. Consistency beats marathon sessions โ motor learning happens between sessions, not during them.
- Retest weekly, same conditions. One 60-second test every week shows true trend; daily numbers just track your mood.
- Play typing games. Racing an opponent keeps you at the edge of your ability โ the exact intensity where improvement happens โ far longer than dry drills.
Remove friction around you
- Upgrade your keyboard last, not first. A mechanical keyboard feels great but adds maybe 2 WPM; technique adds 20.
- Learn the shortcuts for your actual work (text editing, IDE commands). Real-world speed is throughput, not raw WPM.
Ready to train at the edge of your ability?
Play the typing race gameStart with a baseline: take a one-minute test today, write the number down, and retest in two weeks. If you apply even half of the list above, the delta will be obvious.
