WPM vs Accuracy: Which Should You Train First?

2 min readTypeDriveGames

Every typing test gives you two numbers, and beginners stare at the wrong one. WPM is the headline; accuracy is the story. Understanding the relationship between them is the single fastest unlock in typing training.

The hidden cost of every typo

A mistake does not just subtract a word from your score. In real typing it costs: noticing the error, moving to Backspace, deleting, retyping, and rebuilding your mental buffer. Call it two to three seconds per slip. At 90% accuracy on a 300-word document, that is 30 errors โ€” over a minute of pure repair work. The 80 WPM-at-90% typist finishes slower than the 60 WPM-at-99% typist, every time.

Accuracy is the ceiling. Speed is just how close to the ceiling you can fly.

Why net WPM already knows this

Serious tests report net WPM: correct characters รท 5 per minute. Errors do not merely get deducted โ€” they cost you the time you spent making them. That is why raising accuracy from 92% to 97% typically raises net WPM by 5โ€“8 points with zero increase in finger speed. It is free speed.

The training order that works

  • Phase 1 โ€” Accuracy (weeks 1โ€“4): type at whatever speed keeps you at 97%+ accuracy. It will feel slow. Good.
  • Phase 2 โ€” Gentle pressure (weeks 5โ€“8): add 10โ€“15% speed, accept accuracy dipping to 95%, then pull back and consolidate.
  • Phase 3 โ€” Speed with a floor (ongoing): never train below 95% accuracy. If errors spike, your pace is ahead of your skill โ€” slow down 10% and rebuild.

Racing is a natural phase-2 and phase-3 tool: an opponent drags you slightly past your comfort zone, and the live accuracy readout tells you instantly when you have crossed from productive pressure into sloppiness.
