Number Row Typing: How to Type Numbers Fast
Ask a fast typist to enter a phone number and watch them suddenly slow to a crawl. The number row is the least-trained part of almost every keyboard, and it quietly wrecks the speed of data-entry workers, coders and anyone who types dates, quantities or prices.
The correct reaches
- Each number key belongs to the finger directly below it: 1/Q pinky, 2/W ring, 3/E middle, 4/R and 5/T index โ mirrored on the right for 6/Y through 0/P.
- Fingers reach up and return home immediately โ never rest on the number row.
- For heavy numeric work, learn the numeric keypad with the home position on 4/5/6; it is dramatically faster for streams of digits.
Why numbers are slower than letters
Two reasons: the reaches are longer (the row sits a full key above home), and there is no word rhythm โ '4729' has no pattern the brain can lean on. That is why number-heavy typing rewards deliberate drill more than general practice does.
A 5-minute number drill
- Minute 1: type 1234567890 ten times, slowly, with correct fingers.
- Minute 2โ3: realistic strings โ years (2024, 1999), prices ($49.99), times (9:30).
- Minute 4: phone numbers and dates (2026-10-28), no peeking.
- Minute 5: a code-mode race โ code is full of numbers and symbols, perfect pressure training.
