Typing Practice for Programmers: Does It Matter?
"Programming is thinking, not typing" โ true, until the thinking is done and the refactor touches 40 files. Typing speed for programmers is not about lines-per-hour; it is about removing friction between a decision and its execution.
Where typing speed actually pays
- Renaming and refactors: when mechanics are instant, you rename aggressively instead of tolerating bad names.
- Live coding and interviews: slow typing under observation is a real, measurable penalty.
- Pair programming and code review: typing responses quickly keeps the conversation flowing.
- Test writing: the boring-but-valuable work everyone skips when it feels slow.
Code typing is a different skill
English-word typing skill transfers only partly. Symbols ({} () ; =>), camelCase identifiers and shift-heavy patterns make code 15โ30% slower than prose at the same finger skill. Training on actual code tokens โ not English words โ is the only way to close that specific gap.
A programmer's practice loop
- Warm up with one minute of common-word typing (pure finger speed).
- Race on real JavaScript tokens for 5โ10 minutes โ symbols included.
- Once a week, take a 5-minute endurance test on words to track your general speed.
