Best Free Typing Test Websites in 2026
2 min readTypeDriveGames
All typing tests measure the same thing — characters per minute, normalized to 5-character words — but the sites around them differ a lot. Here is an honest map of the landscape, including where our own game fits.
The field
| Site | Best for | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Monkeytype | Minimalists — clean UI, heavy customization | Too many options for beginners |
| 10FastFingers | Quick 1-minute sprints, multilingual | Dated design; noisy free version |
| TypingTest.com | Classic long-form tests with prose | Ad-heavy; slower feedback |
| TypeRacer | Racing real people on real quotes | Quote text is harder than common words |
| Nitro Type | Kids and casual fun — cars for speed | Accounts required; game first, skill second |
| TypeDriveGames (us) | Racing AI rivals + honest net-WPM tests, no signup | We're new — smaller community |
How to choose
- Want a number fast? Any 1-minute common-word test works — ours scores net WPM and accuracy in 60 seconds.
- Want endurance? Pick a site offering 3–5 minute tests; sprint-only sites flatter your speed.
- Want motivation? Racing beats drills — just make sure the site shows accuracy during the race, not only at the end.
A fair benchmarking tip
Compare sites by their text, not their branding: common-word tests score 10–20% higher than prose or quote tests. Always compare your results from the same test type.
