Who Is the Fastest Typist in the World?
The fastest verified typing speed on a standard keyboard belongs to Barbara Blackburn: 212 words per minute, sustained for 50 minutes โ with peaks near 170 WPM using... just to be clear, that is roughly five times the average typist. And on stenography machines, professionals break 300 WPM daily.
The record holders
| Typist | Speed | Setup |
|---|---|---|
| Barbara Blackburn | 212 WPM sustained (peak 170 under test conditions) | Dvorak layout, IBM keyboard |
| Stella Pajunas | 216 WPM in one minute (1946) | QWERTY, IBM electric |
| Court reporters (steno) | 225โ360 WPM | Stenotype machines (chords) |
| Competitive typists today | 200โ230 WPM sprints | QWERTY, online typing tests |
Why steno writers 'type' so much faster
Stenotype machines do not type letters โ they type syllables. Multiple keys pressed together form a chord that expands into whole words by software. That is why a court reporter can capture every word of fast speech: they are playing chords on a keyboard, not chasing individual letters.
How close can a normal person get?
On a regular QWERTY keyboard, deliberate practice takes dedicated typists to 120โ150 WPM. Beyond that, finger travel becomes the physical wall โ which is exactly why Blackburn switched to the Dvorak layout, which puts the most common keys under the strongest fingers. For perspective: 60 WPM already beats 80% of typists.
